Contact HjalmarThe development of new wood-based materials and components is crucial for the wood industry to meet future demands of sustainability and competitiveness. By replacing fossil raw materials, optimizing service life, and strengthening the functionality of materials, wood can play a stronger role in the transition to a climate-neutral industry.
The wood industry is increasingly affected by stricter requirements for climate performance, recyclability, and resource efficiency. Many wood products still contain fossil-based adhesives, surface treatments, and components that make reuse and recycling difficult. For wood to remain a competitive and relevant material, new solutions are needed that enable both technical performance and circular material flows.
At the same time, products need to be designed for a longer life – with the possibility of repair, disassembly, and reuse. This requires new design methods, innovation environments, and collaboration between actors from research, industry, and design. Test beds, digital tools, and incentive systems play a crucial role in driving innovation from niche to broad market acceptance.
RISE works extensively with the development of sustainable materials and components, focusing on reducing fossil fuel dependency and enabling circularity throughout the value chain. Research includes bio-based adhesives, sustainable wood protection, new products from side streams, and new material combinations with improved function, design, and reusability.
Through test and demonstration environments and platforms for collaboration between industry and academia, RISE offers environments where new wood products can be developed, tested, and verified—both technically and environmentally. In the field of digitalization, RISE develops cost-effective solutions for digital product passports and labeling technologies that enable traceability and sustainability data throughout the product life cycle.
With an interdisciplinary approach, and with the support of European eco-design regulations, RISE helps the wood industry move from linear processes to circular, sustainable business models – with a focus on the materials of the future.
