Reuse and use of wood products
Extending the lifespan of wood products and enabling reuse is crucial for a circular and resource-efficient wood industry. By developing flexible building systems, digital tools, and market structures, we can promote the reuse and recycling of wood, which reduces climate impact and conserves resources.
Despite wood's great potential in circular construction and production chains, effective systems for reuse and recycling are still lacking. Buildings and wood products are often designed for single use, which leads to large amounts of waste and scrap. For the wood industry to become more sustainable, a transition is needed where products can be easily dismantled, renovated, and reused. This requires standardization, modular designs, and incentives that make reuse economically attractive.
Markets and logistics infrastructures for recycled wood products are in many cases insufficiently developed, which hinders circular flows. Quality assurance and certification systems are also needed to ensure that reused wood meets building and safety requirements. Education and skills development are crucial to changing the culture of the industry and increasing understanding of the value of reuse.
RISE expertise in reuse and circular design
RISE drives the development of technical solutions and processes that enable flexible and modular wood products with a long service life. We work with digital twins and BIM-based tools that facilitate efficient maintenance, renovation, and material traceability. Through our research efforts, we support the development of certification systems and market structures for recycled wood products.
We collaborate with industry and the public sector to develop incentives and policy instruments that promote reuse in construction projects. Through training programs and knowledge dissemination, RISE contributes to increasing competence in circular flows, quality assurance, and sustainability aspects in the wood industry.
With a holistic approach to technology, market, and policy, we are creating the conditions for a future where wood products are used to their full potential, buildings last longer, and the value of wood is utilized in a circular economy.
