Testbed: Materials testing in hydrogen environment

Our testbed offers customised solutions for materials testing in hydrogen environments. We offer scientific expertise and a fit-for-purpose development environment adaptable for your specific needs.

Hydrogen and materials

Hydrogen as an energy carrier will play a fundamental role in our energy transition towards a fossil-free society. To realise the full potential of hydrogen, multiple material challenges including hydrogen embrittlement must be addressed.

RISE offer within hydrogen and materials testing

RISE is committed to offer sustainable solutions across the whole value chain, as well as supporting the R&D needs of the industry.

Our expert team brings an extensive experience in fit-for purpose test conditions. We can support in the development of customised test set-ups for the hydrogen industry. We offer a multitude of customisable tests suitable for metallic, polymeric, and composite materials. We have access to a wide variety of tests, including mechanical tests in high pressure hydrogen gas environment.

Customised test solutions

Our testbed offers customised test solutions in (frequently pressurised) hydrogen gas environment within:

  • Constant load testing
  • Slow strain rate testing (SSRT)
  • Ripple load testing
  • Incremental step load test
  • Tensile tests
  • Permeation under pressure for various material types
  • High temperature exposures (up to 1800 °C at atmospheric pressure) and TGA (thermogravimetric analysis)
  • Additionally, we offer post-exposure analysis by Thermal Desorption Mass Spectrometry (TDMS). The method evaluates the hydrogen uptake in terms of diffusible hydrogen, which relates to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement.

Investment 2022

  • Fatigue machine equiped with hydrogen module (400 bar/ -25 to +150°C)
  • Module for cryogenic testing
  • Equipment for testing of permeation under pressure to increase our capacity
  • Additional TDS analyzer with mass spectrometry detection
