Static electricity and electrostatic discharge (ESD)

When handling electronics, static electricity can destroy components. This can cause financial losses for the company if measures are not taken.

Purpose

In the electronics industry, we must ensure that staff are not charged by static electricity as these discharges can damage the electronics being handled.

Static electricity can also cause devastating damage when handling explosive gases / substances. Static electricity can damage electronics and electrical products. Especially when manufacturing and servicing electronic products, the risk of damaging electronic components is imminent. Therefore, ESD damage must be prevented by incorporating various protective measures into production.

Static electricity can also pose a life hazard in certain environments. When working with flammable gases (even dust / air mixtures can be ignited by discharges) it can be directly devastating if personnel receive a shock caused by static electricity.

RISE has many years of experience in static electricity and offers the following services:

Training

• ESD basic training

• ESD measuring / Second Course

Advisory services

• Measurement and evaluation of ESD risks and protections in different areas.

• Checks, for example in electronics manufacturing premises.

Tests

• Tests of ESD control products according to IEC61340-5-1 and IEC61340-5-3

• Tests of floor materials

• Evaluation and advance testing of materials with reference to their electrostatic properties.

• Verification of properties after installation, such as flooring materials.

RISE can help you to build a cost-effective ESD protection in your business. As we have expertise in production, training, testing and standardization, we can help your company build ESD protected surfaces, training managers and staff, documentation and compliance with international standards. This means that we are a partner to achieve a functioning ESD protection that meets the requirements of the international standards IEC61340-5-1 and IEC61340-5-3.

Method

IEC 61340-5-1 is an international standard that regulates how companies handle ESD-sensitive electronics within the company. This standard includes requirements for documentation, training of employees, labeling of ESD sensitive electronics, requirement limits, etc.

RISE has the opportunity to visit your company and hold ESD training and / or carry out advisory assignments where we assess your business and give advice on how your company should build a functioning ESD protected area adapted to your business.

RISE also performs field measurements where we, at the customer's premises, measure the company's ESD protection products. We also carry out measurements of ESD floors during new installation.

Deliveries

Type testing of ESD protective products (product qualification) takes place in a climate controlled test lab that meets the requirements of IEC61340-5-1 and IEC61340-5-3. If the tested ESD protection products meet the requirements, RISE will issue an ESD approval and an English test report.

In field measurement, we write an English report that clearly states what is included in the assignment and whether the ESD protection meets the requirements.
