Availible sensors only measure an average of oil bulk. Using a fiber optic probe, the moisture can be measured directly on the insulation, which gives a more relevant information.
The study will investigate the feasibility of developing a moisture sensor for online measurement in transformers. The idea is to use fiber optics to enable a small and dielectric probe that can measure at the most relevant points directly on the insulation around the windings or in the transformer oil close to the insulation. Today there is no technology for this, and measurements are made on the bulk of the oil and usually by sampling.
The moisture content of the oil and the insulating material is an important parameter for determining the health condition of the transformer. Successful development would lead to better opportunities for predictive maintenance and condition-based optimization of the load on individual transformers. It would also help to improve models and give new input to transformer design.
The consortium consists of Hitachi ABB Power Grids and RISE and is staffed with expertise in transformers, oil analysis, analytical chemistry, and fiber optic sensors.
