The project intends to utilize an existing greenhouse test bed in Boden, to equip it with the sensors that can support optimal cultivation for efficient crop yields. The greenhouse is heated by excess heat from adjacent data centers, where temperature sensors and flow sensors provide data on energy consumption.
The municipality of Boden has been designated by the energy authority as a strategy node for world-class production and a flexible and robust energy system, which is a result of several years of work to establish an industrial and urban symbiosis in Boden, where RISE has been a large part. At RISE ICE data center, a number of projects in the area have been implemented (DC-farming, Arctiq-DC and Innovative and Energy-efficient Greenhouses), in Boden there are a number of data center establishments and based on the knowledge from the projects, there has long been a dialogue about opportunities to use the excess heat. This has caused a data center greenhouse of 300 m2 to be under construction and is expected to be operational in the spring of 2022.
RISE ICE currently has an established collaboration with Boden's development and Boden's municipality, which has expressed a strong interest in RISE to further develop the greenhouse, in terms of, for example, operational optimization and further research and various conditions for an expansion to larger commercial operations. Something we see the opportunity to do within the framework of this project application.
The results from the project will be able to form the basis for increased local cultivation, also in the northern climate, in a transition to a more sustainable society with reduced transport. Fundamental to this is access to surplus heat from other activities, such as data centers, but also energy optimization based on measurements in combination with AI developed control of cultivation conditions.
