RISE contributes to Big Science

RISE supports and contributes to the development of large international research facilities, known as Big Science. Among the most well known facilities are CERN, ITER and ESS. As part of Big Science Sweden, we offer broad support to companies aiming to deliver to these facilities.

Sweden finances 13 European Big Science facilities with approximately SEK 1.7 billion annually. These facilities carry out procurements of between SEK 20 and 30 billion each year.

As part of the Big Science Sweden consortium, funded by the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova, RISE helps companies, institutes, and universities to collaborate and do business with these research facilities.

Support and services for companies wishing to supply Big Science facilities

RISE offers a wide range of support to companies that want to contribute to Big Science facilities, with expertise, services and test and demonstration environments in many areas, such as:

  • Electricity and optics
  • Time and frequency
  • High frequency and microwaves
  • High voltage and power electronics
  • Electrical engineering
  • Vacuum technology
  • Sensor development
  • Signal processing
  • 3D measurement technology
  • Mechanical testing
  • Fire safety technology

RISE has a particular focus on supporting small and medium-sized companies in their innovation processes. In collaboration with the Enterprise Europe Network, we offer free innovation training, with tailored support from a professional coach. Read more about the support.

Support in the use of Big Science facilities

RISE works to make resources at research facilities such as MAX IV and ESS more useful and accessible for industrial research. Expertise in neutron- and photon-based techniques makes RISE a leading party in making the research infrastructure more relevant and easily accessible to industry. Read more about our expertise.

RISE delivers to Big Science facilities

RISE participates in research projects and delivers solutions directly to the various facilities. The work builds competence, which indirectly also strengthens Swedish industry. A few examples are:

  • Design and manufacture of high voltage dividers and development of optical fiber sensors for CERN.
  • Development of technology for fusion energy, such as solutions for large power units in the field of power electronics at ITER.
  • Within the framework of the EUROfusion program, we work with the upcoming facilities DONES and DEMO through mechanical testing of materials and components, evaluation of safety and fire risks around liquid lithium and solutions for working in hazardous environments using Virtual Reality.
  • For the upcoming Square Kilometer Array (SKA) project, RISE has contributed to the design of signal distribution systems.
  • Evaluation of time and frequency distribution systems for SKA.
