Real-time Chip Impregnation Pilot

Impregnation studies are of interest for all chemical pulp processes, whether the end product is paper pulp or dissolving pulp. It is especially important to have properly impregnated chips for pulp mills seeking to increase production or encountering issues related to impregnation.

Purpose

RISE has now installed a pilot plant for real-time studies of wood chip impregnation. It is integrated with a pilot digester and is frequently used to investigate how the chips are impregnated and cooked under various conditions.

The impregnation pilot plant was developed as part of a doctoral thesis at the University of Helsinki and is therefore unique. Chips are placed in the pilot plant, and the impregnation process is monitored by measuring the weight change as air is replaced by cooking liquor in the chips.

The original pilot plant has been further developed to fit the existing pilot digester and enables combined studies of impregnation and cooking. RISE can conduct impregnation studies for different types of chips, wood species, temperature and pressure conditions, as well as for different pulp processes.

Method

With this method, it's possible to carefully study the process in a manner that resembles the impregnation phase preceding the pulping process. By integrating our pilot plant with our pilot digester, the entire process from impregnation to pulp production at a customer's site can be realistically simulated. This means we can develop and optimize operating procedures tailored to each customer's unique needs and variables.

Studies are conducted for both paper pulp and dissolving pulp manufacturing. The impregnation pilot is the result of a doctoral project at the University of Helsinki and has been further developed and refined by RISE. By employing this advanced methodology, we can meticulously examine and comprehend the effects of the impregnation process and how they influence the final pulp quality. This affords us the opportunity to offer customized solutions and guidance to optimize production and achieve desired outcomes for our clients.
