Drop test batteries – battery testing

Drop test for batteries is an important part of battery testing where the safety and reliability of the battery are examined. Drop tests are included in some standards such as in UN38.3 and KMVSS TP48.

What is a drop test for batteries?

A drop test involves a test of the battery where it is exposed to shock. The purpose is to resemble the types of shocks that a battery is subjected to during normal use or transport. There are several different methods for conducting drop tests, where the most common methods are drop tests and impact tests of batteries.

Why drop test batteries?

Drop tests for batteries are performed to ensure that the batteries are safe and reliable to use. The damage a battery can get in the event of for example a fall, impact, or collision can cause leakage, overheating, and explosion. It is the producer who is responsible for ensuring battery safety.  Batteries must be thoroughly tested to not cause these problems or safety risks for the consumer. One way of testing batteries is via drop tests.

Drop test – free fall and dynamic impact

Drop test batteries – free fall

To test for drop means that the battery is released from a certain height and falls against a hard surface. From what height and against what surface depends on the battery´s usage area and accurate test standards. After the drop, the battery is analyzed for temperature rise, damage, deformation, cracks, and leaks.

Drop test batteries – dynamic impact

A drop test by impact means that the battery is subjected to impact from another subject that is released or thrown against the battery. After the battery has been exposed to impact, its possible damage is examined, which allows an estimation of the battery's impact resistance.

Drop test for batteries is included in several standards

Testing a battery for drop tests is included in several standards for batteries. Which standard is applicable depends on the type of battery, area of use, and legal requirements. Some of the standards where drop tests are included are UN38.3 and KMVSS TP48, but there are several others. Contact us for further guidance.

Drop test batteries at RISE
