Enhanced Perception Ashore

Sensors for road vehicle automation can complement sensors already established in shipping at short distances close to infrastructure where the sensors are located on land. The method is to implement and demonstrate perception for selected scenarios for identification and target tracking. The aim of the project is to evaluate the benefit.

Maritime transport is undergoing a revolutionary change, where an increased degree of digital decision support is being implemented within the industry, both on board ships, in waterways and in ports. The new sensors can complement established sensors in short-distance shipping, and this requires the development of cost-effective perception systems to enable data collection to higher automated systems, both on board and on land. The project's goal is to adapt perception for maritime purposes when the sensors are placed on land.

The plan is to use a stereo camera, lidar and radar. These sensors can all emit some form of point cloud, albeit with different content. Today, we cannot say for sure how well these sensors perform in the marine environment within the intended use cases, but based on previous projects and the experiences of project members, we believe that the sensors can contribute a lot of value.

The idea is to collect data in the project in active operational environments such as in the port of Gothenburg and in the port of Uddevalla. To ensure that these concepts are best tested and evaluated in realistic and challenging environments, an active dialogue will be conducted with experts and stakeholders.

Digitization and sensor systems can improve the safety and efficiency of ports and waterways by collecting and providing real-time information and observing operationally critical situations. Aggregated traffic statistics can facilitate decision-making both in critical operational environments and when planning the maintenance and development of port infrastructure. This can lead to increased safety of the maritime transport system, as well as strengthen the role of shipping in the transport system as a whole.
