Automated Vehicle Interaction Principles
Will there be new communication needs to warrant safe interactions with automated and cooperative vehicles?
This question is addressed in the AVIP project where we also explore how external vehicle interfaces could be used to facilitate a safe and pleasant interaction between automated vehicles and other road users in their vicinity.
Understanding each other’s intent is crucial for safe and pleasant interactions between road users. When automated and cooperative vehicles are introduced in our traffic system, some of these interactions may be impaired, while some others may be improved. The question is: Will there be new communication needs to warrant safe interactions with automated and cooperative vehicles?
This question is addressed in the AVIP project where we also explore how external vehicle interfaces could be used to facilitate a safe and pleasant interaction between automated vehicles and other road users in their vicinity. Different interface concepts have been designed and evaluated, including the one exemplified in the video below. The project has generated several scientific publications and its ultimate goal is to support development of global standards for how automated vehicles communicate to their surroundings.
