Master’s Thesis: Securing the Contiki-NG OS with TrustZone
We are looking for a dedicated Master’s student to join us in the Connected Intelligence Unit at RISE.
The Connected Intelligence Unit is part of RISE Computer Science in Kista. The current research focus is on the Internet of Things. Among the group's key technologies are the Contiki-NG operating system, uIP stack, ContikiRPL, SICSLoWPAN, and the COOJA network simulator. The unit conducts projects together with industry and academic partners from Sweden and across the world.
The Internet of Things (IoT) comprises many small, embedded devices that operate on severe resource constraints concerning energy, bandwidth, and memory footprints. Faulty or hacked software can cause IoT devices to behave erroneously or launch attacks on other devices in the network.
In this thesis project, the key objective is to investigate and implement methods that employ ARM’s TrustZone architecture to enhance the security of the Contiki-NG operating system. The use cases that can be investigated include (1) securing machine learning models stored on the IoT devices, (2) secure firmware upgrades, or (3) run-time monitoring of the resources consumed by applications. The thesis project will build on a prototype implementation of TrustZone support for Contiki-NG, which will be extended for a selected use case. The work is expected to be evaluated with respect to correctness and execution overhead, in addition to evaluation metrics that are of interest for the specific use case.

Who are you?
We expect you to have extensive experience in C programming close to the hardware. Experience in working with resource-constrained IoT platforms and an interest in security are also advantageous.
