Master thesis: Trends and strategies for the green transition in the electronics industry

We are looking for a Master of Science student for a Master Thesis project at RISE.

Welcome to RISE, department Smart Hardware in Göteborg. In collaboration with the Swedish Electronics Trade Association, we can offer you an exciting R&D environment for you Master Thesis.

During the project work, you will be part of our team at RISE and involved in discussion with RISE colleagues at several different RISE locations across Sweden (e.g. Göteborg, Stockholm, Luleå)

Digitalization can contribute to the decarbonization in a large variety of sectors, and thus contribute to the green transition towards a more sustainable society. However, many electronic systems and components required for this digital transition use electricity, are resource-intensive and create waste at the end-of-life. It is therefore important to address the sustainability challenges in the electronics industry in order to achieve a successful relationship between the green and digital transitions.

The goal of this thesis project is to contribute to a greener Swedish electronics industry by (1) helping companies to visualize trends in sustainability at national & EU levels and the potential implication for the Swedish electronics industry, as well as (2) strengthening the industry’s ability to prepare for these upcoming changes

The Master thesis project will tackle among others the following areas:

  • What does Swedish electronics industry need to strengthen its competitiveness in a sustainable society in the next 10-15 years?
  • EU policies, initiatives and regulations (e.g. Circular Economy Action Plan, Digital Decade, Green Deal) and their impact for the electronics industry
  • Competence strategy

Student profile
You have an interest in sustainability, innovation, digitalization and engineering. You should be a M.Sc. student in the field of environment, electronics engineering, physics, industrial engineering and management or related subject.

You have knowledge and skills in sustainable development, innovation management, policy instruments, and related areas, as well as experience with tools and methods to analyze and develop measures to address sustainability issues in the industry.

You need to be enthusiastic, curious, and keen to develop your skills, enjoy working in an international team and with good communication skills. Excellent language skills in spoken and written (scientific and technical) Swedish and English are a strong plus.

The thesis project can start from January 2023 (flexible arrangement possible). The expected duration of the thesis work is 20 weeks.

Location: RISE, Göteborg. Option to partially work remotely.

Credits: 30 ECTS (academic credits) in agreement with your thesis advisor at your university.
