Master thesis proposal: Computer vision for analysis of porcelain items

Computer vision has been the primal arena for modern day AI. This has driven the development of today's deep learning technology, one of the most important tools in the AI toolbox.

Many museums get questions about related objects that people have at home. The questions are often visual, including a photo of the item in question. To be able to encode knowledge about related items, a machine learning approach may be employed to classify objects based on their appearance.

In this master thesis, you will develop models that analyze porcelain items using deep learning. The work will include analyzing images captured on images collected during digitization efforts in the Rörstrand Museum. You will work in close collaboration with our deep learning research group. The work requires students with an excellent skill set within machine learning, computer vision, and statistical inference. You will be expected to do a literature study in order to get familiar with what the field looks like today, and then start with simpler models and eventually extend or develop upon more advanced solutions. The work may include exploring few-shot learning, active learning, uncertainty quantification. As this is a master thesis project with a research organization, we will help you reach a high level of research excellence, and a successful project may result in writing a joint research paper in addition to the master thesis.

Required skills:

  • Experience of implementing machine learning models.
  • Courses in machine learning, computer vision, mathematical statistics, probability theory or similar.
  • Programming skills. Preferably with some experience of relevant frameworks such as Pytorch, Keras, or Tensorflow.
