Studies of Wood and Wood Handling

Wood is one of the most crucial factors in ensuring high-quality and efficient pulp production. The control of the wood material used in pulp mills is of paramount importance to maintain the quality and efficiency of the production process.

Purpose

At RISE, comprehensive studies are conducted encompassing various types of wood material to ensure its suitability and characteristics for pulp production. Our investigations span across several crucial areas vital for understanding and optimizing the use of wood in pulp manufacturing. One key aspect is the assessment of the economic value of fiber materials. This involves analyzing the composition, quality, and other factors of the wood to assess its value in relation to production costs and the quality and profitability of the resulting pulp products.

In addition to economic value, we also examine the processability of wood, evaluating how well it can be processed and converted into pulp. This includes assessing the wood's chipping characteristics, its ease of grinding and processing in the pulp mill, and its impact on production process efficiency and product quality.

Another important aspect of our studies is evaluating the resulting pulp and paper properties from different fiber materials. This involves assessing how well the wood produces pulp with desired properties such as strength, brightness, density, and other critical factors for the final product. By carefully analyzing these properties, we can optimize the use of wood in pulp production to achieve desired results and ensure high-quality end products.

In our batch-fed chipper, we have the capability to produce well-defined, high-quality chips. This type of chipping enables precise control over the dimensions and properties of the chips, which is crucial for their use in pulp and paper production. When simulating a fiber line or conducting other laboratory tests, we use mill chips that have been extracted under controlled conditions to ensure consistency and reliability in our results.

Before the chips are used in the laboratory, they undergo extensive analysis to determine their physical and chemical properties. These analyses include measurements of chip size, shape, moisture content, density, and other relevant factors. Additionally, chemical analyses are performed to assess the composition of the chips, including levels of various substances that may affect their properties and use in pulp and paper production.

By utilizing mill chips that have undergone rigorous analysis and quality control, we can ensure that our laboratory results are reliable and representative of real production conditions. This enables us to understand how different chip parameters affect the process and product quality and to develop and optimize processes to achieve desired results.

Our ability to produce and analyze well-defined mill chips is crucial for our research and development in the pulp and paper industry. It helps us understand and improve production processes and deliver tailored solutions and advice to our clients to achieve the best possible results.

Within the framework of our research and development, we also offer the opportunity to conduct studies and investigations directly at, for example, sawmills or wood yards. These locations represent crucial links in the processing chain for timber materials and play a decisive role in the production of wood and other wood products.

By conducting studies at sawmills and wood yards, we gain a unique opportunity to examine and analyze various processes and methods used to prepare timber materials for further processing and utilization. This can include everything from logging and sawing of tree logs to chipping and sorting of wood chips for various purposes.
