Analysis for process chemicals

The chemicals coming out of the process need to be analyzed, controlled, and classified to determine the necessary actions for potential post-processing. Below are some common analyses suggested for process chemicals.

Purpose

We are happy to discuss analysis setups for your production process chemicals. Below you will find examples of analyses for the process chemicals lime, black liquor, soap, tall oil, process water, and methanol. There is also a package available for incrustation risk.

Method

Soap:

  • Tall oil (maximum theoretical yield in soap)
  • Lixivium amount
  • Calcium (important for eg crust formation)
  • Dry content
  • Calorific value

Tall oil is a dark brown, viscous, and sulfur-containing liquid formed during the production of pulp via the sulfate process, black liquor, and originates from extractives. The components of tall oil can be divided into fatty acids, resin acids, neutral compounds, and lignin (in small amounts). It contains valuable chemical substances that can be further refined into, among other things, green chemicals.

  • Acid number
  • Neutral substances (unsaponifiable matter)
  • Composition m.a.p. fatty and resin acids
  • Water content
  • Ash content
  • Total sulfur
  • Total sodium

Black liquor - To conduct detailed evaluations of various subprocesses in chemical recovery, analyses of the content/composition of black liquor at different positions are needed. We have several analyses for each type of black liquor that can be performed to assist in the evaluations. Please feel free to contact us for guidance and information.

Black liquor:

- Fiber content (total)
- Residual alkali (hydroxide), carbonate
- Levels of sulfide ion, sulfite ion, sulfate ion, thiosulfate ion, total sulfur content
- Oxalate content
- Chloride content
- Metal content
- Carbohydrates, total content, polymer content, amount of free monomers
- Lignin (total content)
- Molecular weight distribution of lignin
- Amount of tall oil
- Terpene content
- Amount of hydroxy acids (subcontractor)
- Amount of volatile acids (subcontractor)
- Dry matter content
- Ash content

White and green liquor:

- Alkali content, total, active, and effective alkali
- Carbonate content
- Sulfide content, sulfite content, sulfate content, thiosulfate content, total sulfur content
- Potassium and sodium content
- Chloride content
- Metal contents

Incrustation risk:

- Carbonate content
- Sulfate content
- Oxalate content
- Calcium (total content) and Calcium (dissolved content)
- Sodium content
- Aluminum content
- Silicon content
- Dry matter content

Process water:

- Anion content
- Cation requirement
- Carboxylic acid content
- Uronic acid content
- ASA, total content
- Carbohydrates, total content
- Lignin content
- Amount of optical brightener
- Starch content

Lime:

- Amount of free lime
- Metal content (sodium, magnesium, calcium, manganese, iron, aluminum, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur)
- Acid-soluble sodium
- Methanol/Impure condensate:

- Methanol content
- Water content
- Ammonium content
- Total nitrogen content
- TRS content (hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, dimethyl disulfide)
- Total sulfur content
- Monoterpene content (α-pinene, β-pinene, 3-carene, limonene)
- Total monoterpeneoids content
- Total sesquiterpene content
- Total diterpenoid content
- GC-MS: Screening of other organic compounds
