Integrated visualization using GIS and BIM

Research project with the Swedish Transport Administration with the aim of investigating the authority's needs for a visualization tool that uses the possibilities of combining GIS and BIM data. The tool will present infrastructure in the landscape, and enable a greater common understanding of ongoing projects both internally and externally

Today, it is common for larger infrastructure projects to develop or purchase their own visual representation models (for example, 3D rendered images and films) as a way of communicating with citizens and other stakeholders. Development of these models is often time-consuming and expensive, and they are often difficult to coordinate, further develop or reuse. Furthermore, the landscape for working with visualizations is fragmented and it is difficult to effectively coordinate infrastructure projects between different stakeholders as several different visualization tools are usually required with time- and resource-consuming conversions depending on who acts as the recipient.

Coordination, cooperation and communication

LAVIS 2.0 aims to enable coordination, cooperation and communication between municipality, state and citizens by simplifying, streamlining and partly automating the handling, modification and generation of different kinds of visualizations of infrastructure projects to show infrastructure in the landscape. In other words: from working with BIM and GIS data (building information model and geographical information system), to visualized, tangible models in real-time 3D graphics in one and the same solution, instead of today's fragmented solutions that involve complicated operations to move between the different parts of the process.

LAVIS 2.0 is carried out as a continuation of the feasibility study "Where the landscape meets infrastructure- Integrated visualization using GIS and BIM (LAVIS)" (TRV 2019/90 306) which was carried out in 2020. The project, based on the results in the feasibility study, aims to further explore, detail and prioritize the needs that the identified user groups have in relation to visualizations. This with regard to usability, appropriate functions and user interfaces, from a perspective of the entire visualization process. The user needs will be described as requirements for a comprehensive visualization solution. In the project prototype implementations and tests with user groups will be carried out within the framework of an existing visualization solution which in the project acts as an experimental platform.
