Traffic management for an intelligent transport system.

There is an Eu directive since 2010 to develop and implement an Intelligent Transport System (ITS). The project has its starting point from the ITS standards that has been released by ETSI in 2014 and performed research within key technologies which are necessary to realize an ITS.
Certification of system components has been a goal.

Aim and goal

The purpose with an ITS is mainly two, 1) create an efficient traffic system that is 2) traffic safe. The solution from EU is a standardization of an ITS-station. The goal with iTRANSIT is to analyze the ITS station in relation to other important system technologies and components to enable the implementation of ITS.

Challenge

To make ITS a reality there is a great demand of system dependability but also that system components can be realized affordable.

Solution

AstaZero is an important research facility for active safety and iTRANSIT will start up ITS research activity there. A demonstrator has been implemented to practically demonstrate how system components are put together in two key scenarios in a road crossing:

  1. By sharing information from two LDMs (Local Dynamic Map) it is possible to avoid dangerous situations.
  2. By aggregating information from two locale LDMs into one central GDM (Global Dynamic Map) there is a better situation awareness.

Effect

The project has delivered 5 publications, 7 master theses.

FFI project Chronos : 2016-02573 C-ITS Test platform for future transport system (CHRONOS step1) was initiated by iTRANSIT and continues the plane to establish AstaZero as a test facility for  ITS.

Carmenta AB, a partner in the reference group, participated actively in the project and their map server was used to visualize vehicles in real time using data from GDM. Carmenta has now w product TrafficWatch ™ for traffic guidance and monitoring and iTRANSIT has contributed with knowledge.
