Sustainable and Economically Viable Substitutes for Toxic Plating Processes

The project aims to evaluate and introduce sustainable, non-toxic and economically viable alternatives to chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) plating processes for functional and decorative applications in sectors such as automotive, furniture, tapware, electronics, plumbing, etc.

The possible alternatives will be evaluated with respect to technical performance, economy, health and environmental impact. Besides technical performance, project partners will be able to evaluate the viable alternative processes in concept cases by toxicological risk assessment and sustainability. The expected outcome of the project is to reduce the health and environmental hazards associated with chromium- and nickel-based surface processes, replacing them with clean and environmentally friendly industrial processes for decorative and functional applications. In view of the above, the expected effects are to reduce diseases (e.g. cancer, allergies) and reduce impact to the environment by replacing toxic and carcinogenic chromium and nickel compounds.

The following arrangement is planned:

  • Organize workshops and arrange individual interviews with the project partners in order to identify their specific interests, needs, and possible solutions
  • Literature study and a survey to identify alternative solutions of high potential, both on a national and international level, in order to replace today´s plating processes containing nickel and chromium 
  • Sustainability screening and toxicological assessment for the most promising alternative surface processes
