Strategic synergies and conflicts in the pulp and paper industry
The pulp and paper industry is important for Sweden’s economic growth but faces challenges as well as opportunities. The project studies the industry’s business, energy and innovations strategies and their interactions to investigate their importance for energy efficient and competitive production.
Aim and goal
The aim of the project is to investigate how companies in the Swedish pulp and paper industry formulate their business strategies in relation to improved resource efficiency and product diversification, how their business strategies interact with their energy and innovation strategies and how the different strategies affect each other. The goal is to investigate the importance of strategies for the development of energy efficient and competitive production.
The pulp and paper industry is important for Sweden and it´s growth but faces challenges as well as opportunities. The challenges are linked to among others a decline in demand for paper products, competition on forest raw materials and demand for improved energy and resource efficiency. At the same time, there are opportunities linked to the conversion into a bio-based economy, where the industry´s raw materials and side streams can be used for new resource and energy efficient bio-based products.
To address the industry’s challenges and take advantage of its potential, well-defined strategies are required at different levels. Their business, energy and innovation strategies affect and control different parts of the company’s business, but the knowledge on how these strategies are formulated and how they are linked to each other is inadequate.
The project will emerge in a number of recommendations that can be used by the pulp and paper industry when they formulate their corporate strategies. These will help strengthen the company’s ability to effectively integrate energy efficiency and innovation measures with the business strategy, identify synergies between energy efficiency and the development of innovative products, and identify and address related potential challenges.
