SenSoRe -Sensors and sorting for innovative recycling

In the project SenSoRe we are establishing a Swedish test bed for development of analysis and sorting technology for material recycling. The test bed will enable cooperation between researchers and companies along the whole value chain to support technological innovation within the recycling industry.

Aim and goal

The project will establish an open Swedish test bed where new sensor and sorting techniques can be combined and developed to enable more efficient material recycling. The test site allows simultaneous testing and verification on a material flow similar to industrial processes.

Challenge

Waste and scrap material sorting is a complex task that must be done in a cost-efficient way. Today a lot of technology development is performed in isolated labs with limited possibilities for large scale tests in process-like environments.

Solution

The test bed project involves construction of an accessible test facility containing conveyors and infrastructure to evaluate new technical sensor and sorting methods on varied waste and scrap materials. Several pilot applications will be explored for metal, WEEE and plastic recycling. The sensor technologies initially evaluated are LIBS (laser induced breakdown spectroscopy), X-ray transmission, magnetic sensors and eddy current analysis.

Effect

The test bed will function as neutral platform to promote cooperation between partners along the value chain and thereby support new inventions. This will support development and industrial implementation of new sorting techniques that will increase the recycling rate and lead to a positive environmental impact.
