ReWarDS - decision support for a sustainable regional water supply

A generic decision support model for evaluation of regional water supply measures has been developed within the project. The model is based on the widely used methods of multi-criteria decision analysis and cost-benefit analysis to assess whether measures lead to increased or decreased sustainability and whether they are economically profitable.

Aim

The overall aim is to develop a decision support model for assessing the economic, environmental and social sustainability of inter-municipal water supply measures.

Challenge

Several countries promote a regionalization of the drinking water sector; however, few decision support tools are adapted to the inter-municipal level to aid in regional water supply decision-making.

Solution

A generic decision support model has been developed for evaluation of regional water supply measures, including organizational mergers.  The model is probabilistic and is based on a combination of cost-benefit analysis and multi-criteria decision analysis for assessments of whether alternative measures lead towards sustainable development or not, and whether they are economically profitable.

Effect

Project results are expected to contribute to the toolbox that politicians and other decision-makers in the water sector need to make long-term sustainable decisions. The decision support model enables holistic, structured and transparent evaluations of inter-municipal measures and forms of cooperation. The model can provide guidance in evaluations and decisions regarding our future as well as our current water supply.
