Product variability and advanced analytics in papermaking

Research and technical development on papermaking. The results will help minimize cost and environmental impact through efficient use of energy and biomass resources, maximize volume and quality through production efficiency and runnability, meet societal needs with products made from forest biomass, and enable circular economy.

We will address the lack of high resolution online data for paper processes by employing available measurement techniques (e.g. high-resolution, multi-spectral, high-speed cameras) and other monitoring tools. The high-resolution information on properties will in combination with analysis of process- and QCS data be used to identify and understand sources for variability. Models and soft sensors for high resolution prediction of paper product properties based on advanced statistical process analysis or machine learning will be developed. The work will take advantage of close cooperation with mills, and when applicable also as case studies.
