Optimal Maintenance of Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Structures

The purpose of the project is to seek out reliable assessment methods and to develop an improved maintenance method for hot-dip galvanized steel structures. Alternative products and methods with high improvement potential will be compared to the practice described in the current requirements for hot dip galvanized steel.

Proposed maintenance strategies will be evaluated from a technical, economic and environmental point of view, with the aim of finding an optimal method from a holistic perspective. The expected results from the project include providing an objective basis for a change in the current requirements such as international standards and trade specific requirements. The expected goal of the project is to evaluate new tools to extend the life of depleted and damaged zinc layers and to minimize the overall cost of maintenance, reduce the need for reconstruction and introduce more environmentally sustainable strategies.

The work will include a survey of alternative repair methods. Reference objects for alternative methods in different exposure environments will be inspected. Test panels with repaired zinc layers will be exposed in corrosion tests to provide a basis for durability assessments for the various repair options. Environmental impact and total cost will be evaluated using life cycle analyzes.
