New training on the environmental impact of fires

A new training concept is being developed to exemplify the environmental effects of fire and rescue service activities. The training aims to increase understanding of the environmental impact of various tactical choices for fire suppression operations, focusing on vehicle and school classroom fire events.

The role of emergency services is to protect and save lives, property and the environment. Damage to life and property is often visible immediately, but damage to the environment can be difficult to see and thus might not be discovered until much later. The environmental consequences of fire and fire suppression operations follow complex pathways, yet they depend on decisions that are usually made quickly. Research on providing environmental knowledge to the fire and rescue services is very limited and without this knowledge arbitrary decisions could be made at the fire event. However, more attention is being focused on environmental issues now and the emergency services are motivated to minimize the impacts of their fire interventions.

Increase knowledge of the environmental impact of fire suppression efforts

The existing Fire Impact Tool is based on the latest research and clearly illustrates the environmental consequences of different tactical choices. This training project will, with the help of the tool, produce educational material that provides knowledge about the environmental impacts of fire suppression operations. As a result, the ability of the emergency services to protect the environment during fire suppression operations can increase.

Research and social benefits

This project will link researchers with practitioners so that research results can be turned into practical benefits. Together with the rescue services Greater Stockholm, R-Syd and Greater Gothenburg, the tool will be adapted to the users. Then, educational material will be developed in collaboration with MSB and the above three rescue services. Finally, an education platform will be available for rescue services throughout Sweden as well as for students at Lund University and MSB schools.
