Increased security and independence for the elderly with IoT

The project ‘Internet of Things in Care’ aims to explore and test new solutions connected to IoT-units in the homes of the elderly. The goal with the project is to through an open source platform contribute to the freeing and using care resources more effectively in order to create a more sustainable, safe and independent life for our elderly.

The purpose of the ‘Internet of Things Project in Care’ is to find new services and opportunities in regards to how IoT can be used to simplify everyday life and create greater sense of security for the elderly.

Demographic trends in Sweden shows an increasing number of elderly, which leads to increased care needs in our municipalities. Long travel distances in rural areas further contributes to the challenges of elderly care. In order to maintain the same quality and safety for the elderly in the future, new innovations and solutions in the home care service are needed.

The project aims to connect different technical systems and IoT devices across organizational boundaries. Data from the residents housing is used as input for identifying living-patterns (eg, when the coffee maker usually is turned on, water is flushed and motion detected). Information as well as abnormal deviations from the living-patterns are communicated to relatives or to public care. RISE Interactive and RISE Acreo are in collaboration with other project partners working with the open technology platform as well as development and user testing of the services.

Through the IoT-driven technology platform, home-care efforts can be implemented when needed, not just when scheduled. It saves time and resources and when the resident are not in need of care and gives elderly people who want and are able to live home longer.
