Improving work environment in the horse industry through novel methods & tools

Although the horse sector in Sweden has gone through a great expansion, the work environment and methods have not changed. The project aims to contribute to the development of safe and healthy work conditions and sustainable careers in horserelated professions by generating knowledge on how work environment management can be practically integrated.

Aim and goal

The overall aim is to contribute to the development of safe and healthy working conditions and sustainable careers in horse-related professions by generating knowledge on how long-term work environment management can be practically integrated and continuously operated within the horse industry. The goal is to develop methods and tools for systematic work environment management adapted for the horse industry’s needs, with emphasis on characteristics that will stimulate motivation and commitment.

Challenge

The horse industry is characterized by heavy and monotonous work, inadequate routines, low mechanization, high injury rates and poor working conditions. The development of the working environment is probably hampered by insufficient knowledge of the methods and tools that can facilitate the introduction of continuous, functioning work environment management, as well as lack of interest and motivation.

Solution

The focus of the project is to develop practical methods and tools for systematic work environment management, with a goal of raising motivation and the interest for work environment issues in the horse industry.

 Effect

Practical methods and tools, training and motivation-enhancing efforts are expected to significantly improve work environment management in the horse industry. This contributes to improved physical and psychosocial health, fewer occupational injuries and less absence due to illness in the targeted working population as well as improved profitability and productivity.
