Ethernet Communication for Real-time Automotive Applications

Future vehicles will contain a variety of functions to support the driver to make the traffic environment safer and the traffic more energy efficient. There will also be a number of functions connecting the vehicle to other vehicles (V2V) and to infrastructure (V2X). These functions range from safety related driver support and autonomous driving.

Aim and goal

The ECRA project will investigate the following issues related to Ethernet communication:

Reliable and robust communication for advanced safety functions in vehicles, Fault tolerance and redundancy issues in Ethernet networks, Time- critical and synchronisation problem in vehicle communication, Power over same cable as the data transmission, Power over Data Lines, Optical and electrical gigabit links, Efficient implementation of Ethernet software.

Challenge

The main challenge is to build robust and reliable communication networks that can satisfy strict time constraints.

Solution

The project will conduct a thorough investigation of available technologies and test the most promising ones by building prototypes.

Effect

Reliable Ethernet communication will provide a cost-efficient solution for many automotive applications that require high network bandwidth, including vehicle automation. At the same time, the solution will be able to satisfy strict time constraints for high reliability.
