Enhanced cement-based materials for repair applications using 2D nano-materials

The aim of this research project is to combine 2D materials with traditional cement-based repair materials to improve the fundamental properties such as wetting, adhesion and to promote their applications in building and construction repair with optimal balance between technical, economic and ecological performance

The overall purpose of this research project is to use 2D materials such as boron nitride and graphene combining / carbon nanotube/carbon fiber (CN) with traditional cement-based coatings to improve the fundamental properties such as wetting, adhesion and to promote their applications in building and construction repair with optimal balance between technical, economic and ecological performance.

The specific goals include:
(a) a study of the effect of functionalized 2D materials graphene and BN (popularly called “white graphene”) with carbon nano materials to form unique space interlocking structure;
(b) a study of the mechanisms regarding the co-effect of nanomaterials on the morphology, microstructure and the controlling mechanisms for fundamental improvement of mechanical and physical properties of porous cement coatings;
(c) a profound understanding of the number of layers and flakes sizes, chemical bonding among nano materials and cement hydration product;
(d) an investigation of future potential applications of the F2D materials and CNT/CF reinforced cementitious paint composites in building repair with eco-labelling tools for their contribution to greener construction.

It is expected that, with the developed nano-reinforcement, cementitious coatings will provide enhanced adhesion to the surface of the concrete, improved elasticity and hardness as well as better water repellent properties.
