Climate-friendly reed canary grass improves the cycle of plant nutrition

Large volumes of sawdust are used today as animal bedding. By replacing the saw dust with straw and reed canary grass there are several environmental and climate gains to win. Reed canary grass is an energy efficient and good alternative, as the perennial grass can yield good harvests every year, on many soil types and throughout the country.

Aim and goal

The purpose of the project is to develop a plant for production of reed canary grass bedding that is profitable at farm level. The aim of the project is to ensure that reed canary grass production can increase in Sweden.

Challenge

Large volumes of sawdust are used today as animal bedding. By replacing the saw dust with reed canary grass there are several environmental and climate gains to win.

Solution

The project uses the Polish briquetting technique Biomasser as a basic component and through the project, the briquetting system will be developed and complemented with various functions. Through the project, the reed canary grass bedding will be quality assured for the temperature achieved to be called hygenized. In addition to developing a functioning facility, the partners will work to increase interest in establishing reed canary grass production at several locations in the country.

Effect

As straw surplus is only found in certain regions and weather conditions, straw volumes need to be supplemented. Reed canary grass is an energy efficient and good alternative, as the perennial grass can yield good harvests every year, on many soil types and throughout the country.

By replacing saw dust with reed canary grass bedding, a better nutrient cycle of plant nutrition is obtained, and production can generate income on the land's unused cultivation areas.
