The project aims to pave the way for large-scale production of thermoplastic and thermosets from a by-product of pulp production, kraft lignin. The possibilities of integrating plastic production with a pulp mill will be explored. Finally, an implementation plan will be designed to introduce the new process concept to the Brazilian and Swedish markets.
The purpose of this Swedish-Brazilian cooperation project is to use the kraft pulp mill by-product lignin to create valuable bioplastics and resins. The approach modifies lignin properties through reactive compounding/extrusion and reaction extraction.
In collaboration with end-users, this project hopes to develop a variety of lignin bioplastics to be used for products such as agrofilms, car details or furniture. Another goal of the project is to develop wood adhesives for compound wood products such as plywood, OSB or gypsum board.
Upon successful completion, the project will generate new value for the pulp and paper sector. Furthermore, it will contribute toward the transition into a bio-based society by developing alternatives to fossil-based plastics and resins.
