Test bed for textile recycling

This unique facility offers services related to textile processing for material recycling as well as prototype production of materials and products based on leftover textile materials and production waste.

Consultation

  • Advice - Discussion about material capacity and opportunities for the specific needs.
  • Detailed meeting - Detailed planning regarding process opportunities and material selection, with the possibility of a complementary course on sustainable textiles and fibre properties.
  • Visit - Virtual visit showing current equipment at RISE.

Test bed for mechanical recycling

  • Preparation of material - Cutting of the current sample material, as well as removal of accessories such as zippers, buttons, prints, etc.
  • Shredding - Shredding of the textile material, which opens to a new fibrous web.
  • Fibre length measurement - Measurement of fibre length according to standard ASTM D1447, ISO EN 10141, FZ/T 20028.
  • Fiber blending & carding - Determination of fibre fraction for further steps, and testing of material content.
  • Stretching / sliver - Preparation of the fibrous web before spinning.
  • Yarn spinning - Spinning by either open end spinning (OE), which is suitable for short fibres, or ring spinning, which is suitable for longer fibres.
  • Analysis of the yarn properties - Test of the yarn strength and elongation according to standard EN 2062 in standard climate 20C0 / 65% RH.

Choice of prototype / end product

  • Knitting product - Knitting of a yarn piece to evaluate the quality of a final yarn.
  • Nonwoven - Production of nonwoven matrix by carded material which is bonded with heat (thermobonded) or which is needle pounched.
  • Composite prototype - Mixing of material (which have extra short fibers) in an extruder to create pellets, which are then injection molded into a product.

Complementary packages

In addition to the above steps in the test bed, extended material analyses are offered, such as STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, Testing and chemical analysis of textile materials, Abrasion of textiles according to SS-EN ISO 12947-2, Peeling and linting of textiles according to SS-EN ISO 12945- 2, LCA analysis, and consultation regarding sustainability reports.

Test bed for chemical recycling

  • Chemical recycling complements the mechanical recycling of plastics, textiles and glass/carbon fiber composites (GFRP, CFRP). Through chemical recycling can mixed, aged and End-of-Life plastic streams be recycled. This enables our already used plastic materials to enter a new life in a secondary product.
