Industrial production at large scale research infrastructures

As society strives for sustainable development, the manufacturing industry has its main focus on electrification and digitalization. Efficient transportation using electric powertrains requires light-weight constructions to reach low energy consumption. Digitalization within the manufacturing industry enables increased flexibility, shorter lead times, and higher productivity. Consequently, there is a need for more innovation throughout the whole manufacturing system – for both processes and products. A prerequisite for this innovation is a solid knowledge of the interplay of materials and processing.      

Commonly, the equipment used to characterize materials within the industry has limitations and therefore cannot characterize the fast processes that are synonymous with industrial manufacturing using metallic materials. The gap can be filled by neutron- and phonon-based techniques utilizing large scale research infrastructures, which have unprecedented capabilities in time and spatial resolution as well as penetration.

RISE has a strong research and development presence in several industrial branches, for instance, manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace. Our applied researchers span across most fields of technology. Together with our technology experts on imaging, diffraction, and scattering, we bridge the gap from industry to large scale research infrastructures, such as MAX IV and ESS.

RISE is active in making neutron- and photon-based techniques available for the manufacturing industry and collaborates with universities, institutes as well as the large scale research infrastructures.
